(WiP)
Hey gang, with so many changes to the skill system, I thought I'd create a quick guide for those who may be confused or running into trouble, based on what I've learned so far through my testing.
Step 1: Create your Character- After you choose your species, eye color, chin and nose length and all that, choose your basic Profession (Artisan, Marksman, Brawler, Entertainer, Medic, or Scout) based on the type of character you plan on playing, IE- Combat, Crafter, or Social. This DOES cost Skill Points and give you the Novice Box of that Skill Tree, so please see the Warning Below and do NOT select Marksman or Brawler.
My suggestion here would be for Crafters to choose Artisan, Entertainers to choose Entertainer (Counts as your Profession as explained in step 3), and for Combat oriented Characters to choose either Scout (though some Terrain Navigation bonuses have been given to some Professions at Novice already) or Medic if they plan on having some Healing skills (Which is actually a smarter move IMO).
Step 2: Do Tutorial (Optional)
Step 3: Visit a Frog!- There are a few in the Player City "Test Central" on Tatooine, and at least one in every major NPC City around, so find one and you can begin building the character. The first thing you will want to do is choose your actual Profession here. The current options are Bounty Hunter, Smuggler, Squad Leader, Ranger, Doctor, Merchant, Entertainer, and Commando. Keeping this in line with your choice earlier is advised, so if you intended to make a Crafter, I'd recommend Merchant, a Social character Entertainer, and of course for Combat toons BH, Smuggler, Squad Leader, Commando, Ranger, or Doctor if a Healer Role is desired. These skills, from Novice to Master cost NO SKILL POINTS to learn, and can only be unlearned manually on the Skills Tree Page and not through the Frog itself. You can only have 1 of these, so a BH/Ranger or a Smuggler/Doctor is not possible.
Next comes spending your actual points and learning Skills... If you picked Bounty Hunter for instance, what kind of weapons would he or she use? This option is wide-open as the Prof specific BH attacks will work with any weapon now, so choose wisely with that in mind. With 250 Skill Points, you can take 2 Skill Trees to Mastery, and a third halfway, so let's say this BH decides they like to get in close and chooses Teras Kasi Master... They will be able to perform all TK attacks, as well as BH attacks (Eye Shot, Fire KnockDown, Bleed) with a Vibro Knuckler. Then they decide having a Ranged option is a good idea and take Master Rifleman... They can now do all Rifleman attacks as well as BH attacks (but NOT Teras Kasi attacks, or Rifleman attacks with a Knuckler) with a Rifle. Lastly they opt to have some healing ability (a very good idea BTW) and take Medic 4-0-4-0. You now have a Master BH/MasterTK/Master Rifleman/Medic 4-0-4-0.
For Crafters, the idea is the same. Merchant should be your Profession and raised to Master level, then choose 2 Crafting Trees you'd like to have from Architect, Tailor, Armorsmith, Weaponsmith, Chef, Droid Engineer, Bio Engineer, or Shipwright. Artisan itself is still an option, and to truly have all a Trees schematics, you may want to spend those last 2 rows on them to complete your 2 Master Trees. (IE- If you take Armorsmith, Bone Armor is actually found in Artisan Engineering line like some Tailor's clothing is found in Artisan's Domestic Line)
Pure Entertainers should be easy enough to figure out, and can have all 3 Trees (Dancer, Musician, and Image Designer) as well as their Entertainer Profession Mastered.
And of course, Hybrids of these are always encouraged, just beware that it may hinder you in other areas if not done right.
Warning: Marksman, Brawler and Combat Medic are still options on the Frogs as well as in Character Creation and WILL cost you points if you learn them there, but give NO bonuses anymore and do not show up on the Skills Window. The bonuses from Marksman and Brawler have been added to the corresponding Novice Box of that tree. (IE- Novice Pistoleer now gives Accuracy and Speed bonuses for Pistols I-IV of the old Marksman line) Combat Medic has been removed completely. SO DO NOT LEARN THEM FROM THE FROG. If you do, they can only be unlearned by the "Unlearn All" option on the Frog.
Step 4: Armor and Weapons- The Blue Frog currently has limited options for Armor and Weapons, but they are fairly well-made. Pick up a suit of Composite Armor (or Kash/Ithorian if that is your Species) and what weapons you are skilled with. (The BH above for example would want to get a Knuckler, Rifle, and Light Lightning Cannon) *Getting these Sliced by a Smuggler is a good idea, especially since you can easily keep pulling pieces until you get a full suit sliced for Effectiveness or Weapons with 35% Speed or Damage increases.
Step 5: Odds and Ends- Pick up anything else you may need like a Swoop Deed, Med Packs, Credits, Resources, etc, and you're good to go.
